More energy-efficient and durable LED models emerge as mainland China output rises and Taiwan suppliers move upscale.
Flashlight bulb production in mainland China and Taiwan is increasingly emphasizing LED models because of the growing demand for energy-saving and long-lasting light sources.
In the mainland, production of LED units is growing at more than 15 percent annually and is expected to dominate output within the next three to five years. This comes as many suppliers of traditional vacuum bulbs are starting to enter the LED line.
But as investment in LED models is 20 to 30 percent higher, most mainland makers are opting to outsource technology requirements from large companies and state-owned research institutes.
LED flashlight bulb development in the mainland started only five years ago. Consequently, domestic models still lag behind those made overseas, particularly in terms of PCB quality.
Despite their relative lack of experience, mainland suppliers are improving product performance to expand their international presence. LED models now account for the bulk of export revenue and are shipped mainly to Asia, the US, Canada, Germany, France and other countries in Europe.
Taiwan makers are a step ahead since the island's LED technology has matured and component costs are expected to decrease. LEDs are considered mainstream in the domestic flashlight bulbs industry, according to Sung Fe Shehg, advisor of the Taiwan Lighting Fixture Export Association.
Now companies in the island are heading upmarket to shore up profit margins, which have been narrowing amid the influx of low-end LED models
Taiwan suppliers of LED units are introducing efficiency upgrades primarily to add value to their products.
ACL Super Bright Co. Ltd makes LED models with a 0.12A current, therefore requiring much less energy than conventional flashlight bulbs. According to sales manager Carolyn Lee, LEDs are among the most environment-friendly light sources in the market.
ACL, which has three in-house engineers, is focusing on high-end LED bulbs with miniature E10 bases to gain a differentiation advantage. Units are also suitable for automotive uses such as dashboard illumination. |
